Bedard Deal Official

The Baltimore Sun has a nice breakdown of who the O's are getting for Erik Bedard, now that the deal is done. And right now, it looks like they got a lot more than what the Twins got for Johan Santana.

I already knew a little bit about 22-year-old center fielder Adam Jones, but not much more about the other four guys. Among them, it appears there's a 30-year-old closer candidate for this season (George Sherill), two potential mid-rotation starters who are just 20 and 19 (Tony Butler and Chris Tillman), and a 23-year-old closer candidate in-waiting (Kam Mickolio). All this for a bona fide ace who's not yet 29, but also has yet to pitch 200 innings in a season, has never been an All-Star, and has zero postseason appearances.

Well done, Birds.

Now, get what you can for Brian Roberts and we'll check back with you in 2010.

Tillman will be a top 100 BA prospect this year. He was the Mariners' Minor League Pitcher of the year. He might very well end up being better than Pelfrey, and in the end, the package the O's got for Bedard might be better than what Minnesota got for Santana.

But then again, Tillman is 6'5", throws 95 with a plus breaking ball but has control issues. Gee, do the O's really need another tall RHP with electric stuff who can't find the zone? We've already got one of those.

McPhail certianly has upped the ante on the development people. By adding Weiters, Tillman, and Patton to a farm system that already had a little talent (Liz, Erbe, Penn), there's more talent in the Oriole organization today than there has been since I've been in Baltimore. The development people need to produce a couple of capable major leaguers out of that group.
