Write your own caption for this picture. But as he begins to wrap up a record month of April, A-Rod now says he wants to stay in New York next season.
At first my thought was, man this guy's hard to figure out. But as I thought about it a little, he's not hard to figure out at all. He loves to be loved. Right now, he's hotter than Hansel, so everybody's forgetting about last post-season (including #13 apparently). I'll say this though, there are 140+ games to go, plus playoffs if the Yanks fix their pitching. And if A-Rod costs them a key game or two, goes into a slump, or looks at Derek Jeter the wrong way, he could regret these words.
For now, I'll believe him when he takes the field for the first time as a Yankee in 2008.

yeah, since i dont like the yankees i think it would be money if he had a sweet year but they lost or didnt make the playoffs despite his numbers. then, after finally winning over the NY fans he gives them the proverbial finger by walking, and playing SS for another AL east team...
It's like the Texas Rangers all over again. A-Rod is putting up MVP-like numbers, but the Yanks will never win with that staff. I don't think there is any way he will be back in NY next year. It would be sweet for things to play out how Bri described in his post, though.
I think everyone is definitely underestimating ARod's sensitivity. After a year of cheering and standing ovations he'll never opt out of his contract. He'll be so pumped that people like him he won't want to leave even if they treated him like dirt before that.
Eric's right; he just wants to be loved. If he has a great year and leaves, Yankee fans will hate him, and there are a hell of alot of Yankee fans across the country. Rodriguez can't have anyone hating him.
Now he just has to stay hot. If he has a 2-20 during a homestand he's going to hear it and his self esteem will take a nose dive.
But I doubt New Yorkers will like him if he hits 63 HR's while the Yankees go 84-78 and miss the playoffs by 6 games. We'll hear the same tired story about him not performing when it matters ("Sure he plays well in April" and Shocker, he hit another 3rd inning HR).
When he hits HR #60 on September 23rd as the Yankees lose and are eliminated from playoff contention, do you really think he'll get a standing ovation like he did last month?
I find it amusing that 6 months after you couldn't find a Yankee fan who would say "I like ARod", suddenly everyone was his biggest defender. That city is the biggest group of "What have you done for me lately" fans around.
